Making Assumptions

When I started in care I picked up the knife and fork and just started to cut up a resident's food without asking. I just assumed that I needed to and that I was doing the right thing. This resident put me right in my place and I am so pleased that she did. Without thinking I had taken away someone's independence and disrespected them. Always remember that each person you care for is an individual, they have individual needs, wants, abilities, and choices.
